TWO BROTHERS, DIFFERENT TEAMS, ONE AFRICAN WORLD CUP!

by Jide Ladipo on May 26, 2010

This year, the world cup will be staged in the continent of Africa for the first time in its History. As historic as it is, something else might be breaking a record at this year’s mundial. This will be the situation in the case of Kevin-Prince Boateng, who has opted to play for his father’s country of Ghana, while his brother Jérôme Boateng, has opted to play for his own country of birth, Germany.

Kevin finds it hard to shake of his badboy image bestowed upon by the German media.

With both teams drawn together in the same group at this year’s World Cup, and both players looking likely to be selected for their relevant squads, there is a good possibility of two brothers playing against each other for the first time in history. Kevin Prince Boateng, although has represented Germany at Youth level, has opted to play for Ghana because he has failed to make the Senior German squad despite playing well at Club level in recent years.

He cited his indiscipline at youth level with Germany’s U-21 as the reason why he has been overlooked by the German handlers in recent years.

In an interview with FIFA .com Kevin Price Boateng said:
“I really enjoyed playing for Germany. It was recognition for all the work I put in, and the German FA really helped me develop as a player. But I made mistakes. I had a feeling the German FA wasn’t prepared to forgive me and I wouldn’t be given another chance for the national team. I delivered for my clubs, but I was never mentioned in connection with the Germany set-up. By comparison, I could have turned out for Ghana at the 2006 World Cup and at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. I was still holding out hopes of being picked for Germany and playing alongside my brother Jerome, so I turned Ghana down. But now I’ve made a rational decision, with my head rather than my heart.”

Jerome could be playing against his brother, Kevin at the World cup in South Africa.

The Germany versus Ghana match is on 23rd of June 2010 at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg and if both players are chosen by their respective countries to represent them, we expect nothing more than fireworks
