Two African teams kicked off a world cup bid for the continent with a draw and loss on Friday and Saturday respectively. Host nation South Africa drew 1-1 with Mexico while Nigeria lost 1-0 to Argentina. Both games were a spectacle and produced much anticipated drama that befits classic world cup games.
The SouthAfrican vibrant colours was evident in the opening ceremony
The hosts South Africa scored the first goal of the tournament through a local home based player, Siphiwe TSHABALALA. With just a defender to beat Tshabalala latched to a through pass and unleashed a fierce shot that sent the soccer city stadium and the whole of South Africa into jubilation.
But in the 79minute, their celebrations were cut shot when Marquez equalised after South African skipper Mokena failed to clear a cross that came into the box. Perhaps the best chance South Africa had to win the game was when Katlego Mphela hit the post in the last minutes.
Mphela should have won the game if his effort did not hit the post
The Super Eagles of Nigeria, another African flag bearer failed to win and lost out to a much better Argentine side coached by Legendary Deigo Maradona. After conceding an early goal the super eagles salvaged some pride by keeping the Argentines at bay. Nigerian goal kepper won applause from pundits for denying the Argentines at least five decent chances.
The tournament counties tomorrow for Africa with Ghana taking on Serbia and Montenegro.
