SONY Apologizes After Nigerian furor

by Amebor Staff on September 9, 2009

The following is the response to an email sent to SONY by one of Amebor correspondents.

My name is Devon from Sony Style.com and I manage our feedback form. I wanted to reach out regarding your submission relating to one of the PS3 advertisements. I’d personally like to apologize and I shared your feedback onto the PlayStation team. This team recently released an announcement regarding your feedback that I wanted to pass along. This message is also being posted on the PlayStation website.

“It has come to our attention that a recent TV advertisement for PlayStation may have offended some members of the Nigerian community. We never intended to create a situation that would upset anyone, and we have taken action to immediately remove the advertisement from the air. We apologize to anyone this may have offended.”

I appreciate you taking the time to come to SonyStyle.com and share your thoughts.

Here’s a statement released by the senior director of corporate communications at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), Patrick Seybold.

Its about time they wrote back and apologize. It was very rude of them to do that. Very very disrespectful! No Chi Chi, even if we do have 419ers that doesn’t mean that they have to be prodcasted like that. Because even they give us all a bad name. Nonetheless, wat they do is wrong and they will be corporately punished for it.

LOOOOOL @ the comments above. Really now, have we resorted to cursing?
SONY can't really be blamed. Naijas (419ers) have made a bad name for themselves. Why now do people want to get angry and start shouting @ SONY. Why not get angry and put this same energy when the 419ers were busy carrying their business about? Don't come and make noise because Nigeria's name was mentioned. Had it been any other countries name no one would care.
