Now, on to day 2 of the Vegas reunion. It took some efforts to get out of bed, after the intense partying of the Swagga and Flirt event by Big Moose Ent. and Party Addicts.
Efforts by the Nigerian government to rebrand itself to Nigerians in Diaspora got started with a town hall meeting with Speaker of the house of representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole. Although we are not sure if the Government did its image any favors to Nigerians in the Diaspora, with the manner in which Mr. Speaker spoke.
The Resourcing and Rebranding (R&R) event was suppose to be an opportunity for Nigerians in the Diaspora to throw questions at the chief speaker of the Nigerian house of Reps, Dimeji Bankole but the feedback we got from the attendees of the event was that they had more questions thrown back at them by a man they saw has been arrogant.
In his early forties and accent that suggested that he had a British background, Mr Bankole was straight, blunt and quick to lay down some dark side of the Nigerian problem.
What we and most of the attendee we spoke to did not like was his attitude towards those who asked him questions. Giving the fact that it was a question and answer event in which Mr Bankole was the one been put under scrutiny. We at amebor did not understand why he always wanted to know where who was questioning him came from. Will it matter whether my roots are from Niger republic but I grew up in Kano? or that my parents are from Cameroon but I was born and raised in Calabar?
Our chief writer did ask Mr Bankole a simple question about the proposed 6,000MW energy production bench mark promised by the Nigerian Government and he first response was to ask: “Where are you from?”, “What do you do?” “In what capacity do you operate?” Come on Mr Speaker, you are not about to give me a job!
Mr Bankole hinted that the issue of power generation will not be solved anytime soon. Considering the fact that Nigeria will be 50 next year, should that be such great news to Nigerians in the Diaspora? I don’t think so, mate!
Mr Bankole’s assertion that proposals must benefit certain people in office or it will not work is a rude reminder of the Nigerian problem. Then we had that massive altercation between Mr Bankole a certain photographer, Kola Shobo about how the Nigerian Government needs to do more in promoting arts and culture.
Dele Momodu, the popular Editor of Ovation magazine also pointed to the speaker the low self esteem of Nigerian leaders and how it has in turn affected how they view the Nigerian people.
It was evident from all of Mr Bankole’s response that he had a preconceived notion about Nigerians in the Diaspora. His seemingly notion that Nigerians in the Diaspora are not contributing towards nation building leaves much to be desired from a politician of his class.
Mr Bankole was definitely not lacking in confidence but what he lacked was an ability to create a rapport with a generation of people who had been forced to live outside of their country due to bad leadership. We didn’t write this review to take a dig at Mr Bankole but we think the truth be told.
Despite all, we still the positives in the man. He is definitely a man of intelligence, whom I believe could one day lead Nigeria. Perhaps we need more people like him in Nigerian politics because as we have seen in the past he himself has been a victim of the Nigerian system a lot of times.
