For those that don’t know, today October 1st, marks the 49th year since Nigeria gained independence from her colonial masters, the British. Even after 49 years, one thing still isn’t clear to me as a “Nigerian.”
When we say “Nigeria,” are we referring to a mere geographical location on the world map, or a people with (or without) a common purpose?
When I and other “Nigerians” call ourselves that term “Nigerians”, what do we mean? What does it mean to be a “Nigerian?” Do we mean we are from a location in West Africa, or is there more to our union than a mere location,? In some cases, the green (in)famous passport?
So while you go on about the celebrations over the weekend; the parades, parties, picnics, and public holiday for those in Nigeria. Please ask yourself, “What does it mean to be a Nigerian?” Hint:Think of how a British, French, Arabian or American will answer that question about their country
