Lagos Nigeria, Feb 7 – With rapper, Neato C and former “Most beautiful girl in Nigeria,” Munachi Abi as hosts, the 2010 Future awards kicked off at the Lagos Muson Center – With a keynote speech by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Managing Director, World Bank. In her speech, she admonished the Nigerian youths, who are the largest demographics in Nigeria, to demand for accountability from the leaders, “peacefully.”

As one will expect, there were various performances on the night, however, there were no highlights icon sad I rep Naijas Future | Future Awards 2010 But the high of the night was in the award ceremony itself – show casing the best of the Nigerian youth.

The 26 year old Ify Aniebo’s achievement and goals are certainly inspiring, which explains why she won the Young Person of the Year award, and award for Best use of Science.

Ify Aniebo, Young Person of the Year

Ify has a bachelors degree and Masters in Genetics, and Applied biomolecular technology, respectively, and currently pursuing a PhD in clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford, with focus on Malaria research. She working on finding a vaccine that will hopefully eradicate the disease completely. She was the youngest person, and the only black in the Wellcome-Oxford-WHO unit in Thailand and in the Malaria Department at the Sanger Institute in Cambridge.

Professional of the Year- Ifunnaya Maduka (Dean student affairs at the Opraj leadership school in SA)
Screen producer of the year- Kenneth Gyang (Finding Aisha)
Sportsperson of the year- Janet Dung (Athletics)
Style Entrepreneur- Linda Ikeji (Blackdove communication)
Team of the year- African youths unite for change
Young person of the year – Ify Aniebo

Covering the event for the first time – we didn’t know what to expect, but I must say we weren’t disappointed. Apart from a few technical issues with the sound, and the show commencing about an hour and half late – it was a rather successful one.
