FLOODS HIT THE CITY OF LAGOS | #Nature’s Fury

by Edij Opidal on July 10, 2011

Nature has unleashed it’s fury again on the city of Lagos. Today some areas of the state went under water in a new spate of floods to hit the state.

This afternoon the Commissioner of Environment in Lagos State, Tunji Bello released a statement saying:

‎Dear Lagosians,
Please bear with us. Today’s downpour has been heavier than normal as the state govt. had earlier warned. It has been raining since 5am in many areas and it hasn’t stopped. The water level has risen incredibly so that the channels that are meant to discharge water from the roads & drainages r completely locked because of the high tide and because both d Atlantic Ocean & Lagoon that receive water from our channels have risen more than usual.

Please be calm and do not panic. Once the rains subside, the water on the roads would gradually disappear. Our men are on the field working to manage this situation. Please endeavour to remain indoors as much as possible until the rain stops. Thank you for your understanding & please send this message to all your contacts.

Areas susceptible to flooding have taken a direct hit by the heavy showers

The severity of the floods is quite evident in the pictures that have been circulating the internet. Last year, Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Governor of Lagos State, said that flooding was not due to lack of infrastructure on the path of the government, but rather it was due to the force of nature. Experts have warned that with continuous rising water levels, coastal towns in Nigeria might feel the negative impact of flooding during the raining season.
