Some few weeks ago, we wrote an article about an upcoming music prodigy, MayDre. This time around we have a single from the talented young Nigerian artiste titled “Tonite”. The song was produced by Kiddominant another young upcoming producer in the Nigerian music industry.

BEZ – Super Sun | Album Review

I am usually excited about writing a new post, but this time I think I might just do the peanut butter jelly dance! Seriously, I am so happy that I get to review this amazing album by the best thing that happened to music – BEZ.

Bez refers to his music as “Alternative Soul” but I say it’s an eclectic hybrid of all things Soul and much more – Pure Soul, Neo-Soul, Afro-Soul, Acoustic-Soul, Jazz and R&B. He lists the likes of Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Brian McKnight, Corinne Bailey Rae and Jeremiah Gyang as some of his musical influences. On July 24, 2011, Bez officially released his 15-track debut album tilted Super Sun under Cobhams Asuquo Music Production Label. His previously released songs such as “More You” and “Zuciya Daya” appeared on this album. Cobhams produces all but one song on the album – “I Know” which is produced by IBK Spaceshipboi.

I’ll just go straight to the point and start with my favorite tracks on the album. Here’s one – “Super Sun Remix” featuring – Eldee, Ice Prince & Eva Alordiah – I like this track because it is very laid back, encouraging & soothing. This is a nice track because it wasn’t drowned with too many words, the message passed across was self-awakening and the featured artists delivered. This track boosts one’s self-esteem.

“That Stupid Song” is also one of my favorite tracks because it brings back childhood memories. I had a big smile on my face while listening to this track and it also features these two amazing artists – Cobhams and Praiz on the main vocals. This is a feel-good track that just puts you in a good mood. It reminds you of the nursery rhymes like tinko tinko, bojuboju, sander lilly, twinkle twinkle little star and other childhood songs. What makes this track even more fun to listen to is because it is very relaxed and it has this “jazzy feeling” to it. It just puts a smile on your face.

I believe everyone is familiar with this particular track “More You.” I think I cried the first time I saw the official video. After watching the video, I was confused at first but I realized that he was an invisible presence. I had Goosebumps just listening to his voice. This song has everything – great storyline, AMAZING vocals, the acoustic, poetry, Love … His choice of words – so deep! This song tells you to love in the best way you can, while you can. Bez sang from his soul on this track and to say it was beautiful would be an understatement. This track will remain one of my favorites by Bez.

So, I got this album last week and I have listened to this particular track over 20 times. This track is the best track on the album. Just writing about it is getting me excited all over again. If you are a jazz lover, “The Good, The Bad, The Ugly” is the track to listen to. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG. I don’t know what I love more – the base guitar or the Bez singing in Hausa language “Ruwan Sama yana zubawa, A kan dukan mu a duniya nan, Ranan sama tana haskawa, A kan dukan mu a duniyar nan” meaning “Rainfall pours on all of us in the world, The sun shines on all of us in the world.” I would love to learn the Swing dance just because of this track.

It was really hard picking my favorite tracks on this album, so I had to listen to it over & over & over again. Honestly, every single track on this album is worth listening to so I won’t say anything about the rest of the tracks, just get the album. Super Sun gets a 10/10 from me & I am 100% certain that you guys will agree with me after listening to it. If you love good music, buy this album NOW! #ThankMeLater

WIZKID “Super Star” Album Review

People tend to misunderstand me when I say I’m not a big fan of WizKid. To them, that automatically makes me a “hater”. On a good day, I wouldn’t rush out to buy WizKid’s concert ticket not because he sucks as an artist but because he is yet to “wow” me with his music.

The fans went crazy on Twitter when the album was officially released because, WizKid dropped a #Gbagaun tweet and my Amebor self was there to capture it!

I couldn’t help but listen to his new album “Super Star” after reading so many tweets about it.

PROS

For a first album, it didn’t fail. A couple of tracks caught my attention & I had them playing on repeat… Like “Love My Baby”, “Slow Whine FT. Banky W”, “Say My Name”, and the hit single “Wiz Party”. After reading a lot of negative tweets about WizKid, I was skeptical about the album but I didn’t regret listening to it.

CONS

I expected a lot more from the album but I was really disappointed when I realized that out of 16 tracks + a bonus track, 6 of his old songs were on the album and most of them were better than the new songs on the album. I expected more hit songs from the album but none of the new tracks were up to the plate. I’ve heard about how great of a vocalist WizKid is, but I doubted that in this album because all I could hear was auto-tune abuse. As a singer, most of his songs should rely on post-production. I want to listen to your real vocals, not a robot.

Overall, the album was worth listening to and I rated it 6/10. WizKid is very talented and I believe he can do a lot better. This is going to be a great year for The EME Crew and WizKid but, I would love to see him do a lot better with his real vocals and less auto-tune. I don’t know if he is trying to “improve” the quality of the voice by using auto-tune, but sometimes, less is more. A little reality wouldn’t hurt at all.

Review- A Man, A Woman, A Genie, A Gun

Do you believe in genies? Yes or No?? Whichever you chose, there’s something for you in this film. (Which happens to be short, only 17mins). All of the 17 minutes were worth keeping my eyes opened for. My hands are tied here, can’t give much away But I tell you what; every one in the theater had a series of great laughs.

The Film

The most commendable part of this production as a whole was in the writing and directing, which was done be Chuks himself, but that’s not to take anything away from the superb acting. He cleverly combined the four words in the title, with stereotypes, a racial one at that – it must be hard to be a black Nigerian.

The role of the urban genie fitted Godfrey to the ‘T’. And the other two main actors, Lou Martini and Limor Hakim were on top of their game. As for Chuks, with this kind of start, the sky is the limit.

The night ended with a Q and A session with Chuks Nwanesi, and all the cast members; Lou Martini Jr., Limor Hakim, Seregon O’Dassey, Adam Griffin, Althea Vyfhuis, minus one – Godfrey. My only question for Godfrey is, WHY DIDN’T YOU SHOW UP?

Event Description: On Friday July 16, MUI|PR launched a diverse collection of African art forms in Music, Fashion and Art photography. The affair, the first of its kind in New York City (NYC), was leveraged to discredit misconceptions, generalizations, and stereotypes surrounding Africa by introducing the works of Africans and that which they communicate.

In keeping with the ethos and motivation of MUI|PR, the affair introduced a meeting of style, photography, and music from the African perspective, but geared towards the global community. It featured performances and displays by the following established emerging talents:

Visual art display by Wole Onafowora, proprietor of NYC-based Rookie Photography;
Couture and ready-to-wear designs by DC-based Kreatif Designs, Philadelphia-based Roshe Dousuah and Chicago-based Studio Alade;
Live performances by two of Kenya’s musical geniuses, Kanja “the African King” and Sheilla “Safari” Ankwara.

In one night, these three groups of art professionals immersed attendees in Africa through their own eyes, ears and aesthetic sensibilities while fueling dynamic exchanges within and without.

N.A.I.R.A Lost In Translation | Music

If you are looking for energy, charisma & good lyrics, this is the artist to listen to. She calls herself N.A.I.R.A, an acronym which stands for “Nigerian American I Represent Africa”. I found this mix-tape Lost In Translation very refreshing & exciting at the same time.

One of my favorite tracks on the mix-tape is “Fly hustle, fresh grind”. Naira believes it’s time for us to be fly, be great, believe, time to set our plans in action and it’s time for us to be fearless. If you’re a hopeless romantic like I am, then you’ll fall in love with another track “Back to you”. Naira has this earthy quality reminiscent of the blues that I really like. This mix-tape has the ability to lighten anyone’s mood.

9ice gets in touch with “Tradition” | Review

When you hear the name 9ice, only one thing springs to mind: party rider. Sure he is, as his first album flooded not just Nigerian party scenes, but most African ones too. His ability to mix excellent melodies with his mother tongue always results in an irresistible urge to get up and roll your hips, drop it down, bring it back up and turn it 360 degrees to the point where you start cussing him when you wake up the next day . Although he’s still very much a party-tracks connoisseur, his latest album, Tradition, showed us just what a softie at heart our beloved Abolore Akande is.

Tradition, released all the way in December never really caught my attention even though I claimed to love him from his Gongo Aso days. Let’s just say I was one of those people that thought he was a one-album flash-in-the-pan wonder, kudos to him for proving me wrong. The first track I listened to off the album was Gbamu-Gbamu and like the rest of Nigeria would agree, very good track. I couldn’t get enough of it the first few weeks of my hearing it and when the video came out, fell in love with it even more, well partly down to the fact that it looked like 9ice was dancing to a completely different song in it. Despite his off-beat dance moves, no-one can take away from the album the pure genius of it.

With tracks such as Anytime where he speaks about his humble beginnings and his struggle to make it, you can‘t help but just feel like you rode the waves with him. He pays homage to his grandmother who he says is the influence behind his success as a Yoruba R’n’B artist as she was always using proverbs to get her points across, and also his friend Faheed Ishola who he said he lost in the struggle. It is such an emotional track but with a feel-good beat that will leave you marvelling at the pure talent he mysteriously possesses. I say mysteriously because you wouldn’t believe just one person embodies all that talent. Also, another song which shows you talent at work, I Don’t Care. That track will, true to his words, make you not care. You will actually want to live for you and by your rules alone. “…cause I got God behind me, I can’t fear. Bring it on, bring it on, I’ll be right here” and “….Legally you go enter coma with this flow”. Now how sick is that? 9ice, again, kudos.

Being a married but recently separated man, it’s no wonder the track Once Bitten, Twice Shy has attracted so much controversy, with different theories emerging as to what the song really means. In all fairness to the fans, albeit some bad-belle ones, the song does sound like it was directed at Toni Payne, just for the simple fact that he just separated from her. With its melodic lyrics, emotional delivery and the fact that well, Payne is a girl we all loved to hate just ‘course she got to 9ice first, you just can’t help feeling so very sorry for him but at the same time, putting the song on repeat.

Nonetheless, Tradition is not a gloomy album. I guess 9ice just wanted to show us he’s more than a party rider, but we so much love him for being one. Charging Charger – big tune. I defy anyone to listen to that and still sit down. When I first listened to it, I felt some funny movements in my body, my hips making a sudden movement and my chests jolting in time to the heavy bass, I had no idea it was 9ice urging my body to let go and surrender to the song. If you are a bit on the razz side (yes, we are Amebor.com prides ourselves on being quite posh), then Liquor is more for you, where he sings a high praise of the intoxicating beverages, glorifying it, making it not exactly my cup of tea. There are so many other tracks on the album with feel-good factors like Bo Kini Yen, an anthem for woman-wrappers, Mi O Seru Owo for the hustlers and Respect Is Reciprocal for, well, everyone. Besides, with the release of Tradition Volume II, which is just a few tracks different from the first one, you really have no reason not to love this guy. Appetizer, which is on volume II is an absolute smasher. Again, I defy anyone to listen to it and not fantasise about him, be it male or female. After all these, it’s safe to say our 9ice has earned his stripes as an artist and never disappoints us where his music is concerned, shame we can’t say the same about his choice of women, so lets accord him the respect due, as a musician that is.

Cap B gets it Done | REVIEW

I have heard a lot about this rapper, but I never really gave him the time of the day, until now, and I am glad that I did. Cap B is a song writer, rapper, performer, and we also know him as the sneaker head and fashion renegade. He released a mix-tape titled CAP-a-B-ility and what that title is trying to tell us is that he trying to prove himself capable of today’s revolving music industry. After listening to the mix-tape, I don’t think he is just trying, I think he has actually proven himself capable.

The first song that caught my attention was Hello. It’s basically just talking about groupie love. If you love to dance, then Hello is your song. Another song that made me forget about my rare disease of NoAssAtAll and shake that little thing back there was “Ma Se Mi Lese” (omoge Lepa).

On CAP-a-B-ility, several artists like Y.Q, Sauce kid, Iceberg Slim, KenO Kennett, Leksai, Tonestar, Justn Kase, P Cuz, L.P, Kevin West were featured. The mix-tape features several songs like: Beat it up, Are You Fly, Lagos Party Remix, Rude Boy ft. Rihanna and several others. I think Cap B is a great rapper and I give two thumbs up to the person who makes his beats…Loved them!

Jim Iyke – Who Am I??? | REVIEW

I knew I was making a big mistake by listening to the album when it started off with a bunch of guys screaming “hey…ah” like some kinda ritual was going on. I have to admit though, the soundtrack wasn’t so bad. The album wouldn’t be a complete failure if this was year 1998. I think the Nigerian music industry has evolved so much for someone to come out with this crap in 2010 and call it music.

He featured Slow Dog in one of his songs titled Ikenna who featured lyrics like “His name na Ikenna but I call him Jim Iyke….This guy get too much ability. He speaks well, dress well, dey too fresh like say he dey rub Mary Kay” LMAO!

And my favorite quote of all time was from his latest hit song Born To Do This — “Skeptics were born to doubt this, critics were born to break this, cynics were born to diss this, chicks were born to love this! “ Pure poetry!

The worst song on the album was Track 7 “Bad Boys don’t kiss & tell”. The only song that wasn’t so painful to listen to was Who Am I ft. TuFace. The title of the album is Who Am I, and I think Jim Iyke needs to ask himself that question again because he hasn’t found himself yet. I would suggest that he sticks with Nollywood because music is NOT for everyone. In my opinion, he has failed as a rapper. Some people are naturally talented, some people work on it for a long time & they get better, and some just don’t have it no matter how hard they try. Jim Iyke does not have it. He’s not even close.

I wouldn’t call Who Am I a complete disaster because that would be the biggest understatement of the year. His rapping style took me down the memory lane when I was in JSS 2. My class mates and I would come up with the weakest lines ever and we thought we were the stuff

I have a question for Jim Iyke though – What the hell were you thinking?

Fortunately, there were only two tracks on the album (14 & 15) that I didn’t complain about and I guess that was because they were just instrumentals. I definitely give this one thumbs down. I wouldn’t suggest listening to the album to anyone, except you want to torture yourself like I just did.

African Night at Suffolk University turned out to be lovely. Hosted by Twin Experience/Rawstepperz (Lexx & Osi) with performances by various artists such as Fredrick, Jay, Tracy Morris, and most notably Duncan Daniels, who killed it on stage with his dance troupe. Big Amebor shout-out to Juma, Laiza and the rest of the crew for a well put together show. Shoutouts also to DJ Obi of AJ Entertainment and Afro Dz Ak. Here are the pics from the night
