ANKARA FEST 2010 IN LOS ANGELES

Ankara Festival is billed for September 5th 2010 in Los Angeles

Naija Entertainment proudly presents ANKARA FEST 2010. A show that celebrates the Nigerian/African Culture through Fashion, Dance, and Music. The ANKARA FEST 2010 is the first of its kind in the western part of the United States, and promises to be a yearly event moving forward. This years show will be Hosted by Nigerian Hollywood actor Razaaq Adoti, and Co-Host Eno Inwek.

Top African Designers from all over the United States, Dance Performance by students groups, and also performing will be Neato C, Mike Okri and Odichi in concert. The After Party will be at the Marco Polo Lounge in Hollywood. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.anacca.org/festreg.php Tickets are $50, regular Tickets are $30.

Miss Nigerian Independence Pageant | New York

The Miss Nigerian Independence Pageant is an annual pageant which occurs during the Nigerian Independence Celebrations in New York City. The pageant honors a young woman based on her poise, intelligence and appreciation for Nigerian culture. The winner is crowned Miss Nigerian Independence and participates in the Independence Day festivities including riding on the pageant float, addressing all parade attendees and greeting each of the major sponsors.

Event Description: On Friday July 16, MUI|PR launched a diverse collection of African art forms in Music, Fashion and Art photography. The affair, the first of its kind in New York City (NYC), was leveraged to discredit misconceptions, generalizations, and stereotypes surrounding Africa by introducing the works of Africans and that which they communicate.

In keeping with the ethos and motivation of MUI|PR, the affair introduced a meeting of style, photography, and music from the African perspective, but geared towards the global community. It featured performances and displays by the following established emerging talents:

Visual art display by Wole Onafowora, proprietor of NYC-based Rookie Photography;
Couture and ready-to-wear designs by DC-based Kreatif Designs, Philadelphia-based Roshe Dousuah and Chicago-based Studio Alade;
Live performances by two of Kenya’s musical geniuses, Kanja “the African King” and Sheilla “Safari” Ankwara.

In one night, these three groups of art professionals immersed attendees in Africa through their own eyes, ears and aesthetic sensibilities while fueling dynamic exchanges within and without.

CLASH OF THE BEAUTIES: Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria 2010

This past weekend, Saturday May 22, saw the crowning of a new “Miss Nigeria,” or as should we say “Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria” (MBGN), as Silver Bird Group tagged it.

The event which was held at Eko Hotel’s new Expo center had 30 beauty queens vying for the crown. After the list was trimmed to 15, and then to 5 – Guy Murray-Bruce, President of Silver Bird entertainment ended the suspense when he announced the 1st runner-up, Miss Niger, thereby declaring Miss Plateau State, Fiona Aforma Amuzie , as the MBGN 2010.

Miss Amity: Miss Kwara – Ruth Chinenye Chukwueke
Best Traditional Costume: Miss Delta – Onoma Osiki

The top 15 contestants of the night were:
Miss Yobe, Miss Rivers, Miss Plateau, Miss Lagos, Miss Akwa Ibom, Miss Abuja, Miss Benue, Miss Ekiti, Miss Ebonyi, Miss Edo, Miss Osun, Miss Niger, Miss Gombe, Miss Ogun and Miss Cross Rivers.

Other winners

Onyeka Martina Udechukwu Miss Abuja FCT was chosen as Miss LaCasera 2010. She will receive a 1 Million Naira cash prize. Shalom Obi, Miss Ebonyi won the Face of Select Pro Cosmetics Contest, and a 500,000 Naira cash prize.

Now to the glitches

Though it was a colourful event, I and just about every body on my table, which was right behind the judges think the was a bit too long – felt like a Night vigil as it went on till 1:15 am. And yes, the infamous “African time” syndrome. . .event commenced about 90 minutes late.

People

The hosts on the night were IK Osakioduwa and the gorgeous Jasmine Murray-Bruce. I must point out that Jasmine was visibly nervous on that stage – tentative on her lines. It felt like a Deja Vu, as IK had to step in a few times to save the day, like he did at the 2009 edition.

There were performances from Timi Dakolo , MI, Basket Mouth and RL of the now defunct R&B group, Next.

The judges included Agbani Darego (MBGN 2001 / Miss World 2001), Bryan Okwara (Mr Nigeria 2007), Omowunmi Akinnifesi (MBGN 2005 and Miss Tourism International 2005), Nadia Letova (Danel Nig. Ltd).

TEMMEY TRENDS: Making a bold statement in the African Fashion World

In 2009, a lady in Coventry, England, made a bold move by establishing an apparel company called Temmey Trends. Motivated by the idea of making contemporary African textiles available for Africans in the United Kingdom, Temmey Trends is slowly growing into a household name.

Temi Akanni, the CEO of the company says she finally decided to turn her dreams into reality last year and that with hard work and help from friends she has been able to kick start the business from absolutely nothing.
“It certainly has not been easy but the determination to provide the best for our customers has been spurring us on. The reason behind ‘TemmeyTrends’ is not the ideal of the textiles alone, but the designs that comes with it. We have our own tailors to sow any designed style for you at your convenience and at a reasonable price within your means” says the 20 something year old CEO.

A look at the product range shows that Temmey Trends sells affordable African material like London Wax, Super Wax, Embossed, Atiku, and Golden Block. It also designs free of charge for customers. An observation of the Facebook group created for Temmey Trends reveals that people are beginning to appreciate using African textiles to make western styled clothes. With such a bold move taken by Temi Akanni to delve into a niche market that was frowned on in the west until recently, we are in no doubt that the company is here to stay.

I came across a new, refreshing line while trying to find what to wear for the summer and especially for the NRC Reunion in New York. Thru my search I noticed Motherland Krooks, a line started by philanthropist and designer, Seyi Sowunmi which captured and blended urban and african influences. MK»As an African, one can help to notice how corrupt are countries are. Corruption, hunger and poverty are top issues in Africa and I want to capture these issue through clothing. MK»‎I am from The Bronx, New York.

AMEBOR»‎The home of Fat Joe and them, cool cool…so what is a typical day in the life of Seyi like?
MK»My days are pretty unpredictable, but a typical day will be going to the office in the morning, then trying go to class in the afternoon. I usually pick up ideas for new designs during the day. When I get back on campus I start designing, promoting or studying. Sometimes both. ‎I don’t sleep till I’m able to get ideas out my head by sketching or research.

African Night at Suffolk University turned out to be lovely. Hosted by Twin Experience/Rawstepperz (Lexx & Osi) with performances by various artists such as Fredrick, Jay, Tracy Morris, and most notably Duncan Daniels, who killed it on stage with his dance troupe. Big Amebor shout-out to Juma, Laiza and the rest of the crew for a well put together show. Shoutouts also to DJ Obi of AJ Entertainment and Afro Dz Ak. Here are the pics from the night

Howard University’s ASA 7th Annual Fashion Show

Stepping on the glorious and prestigious campus of Howard University, we were greeted with snow flurries and a warm smile. I was geared and ready to see what HU’s African Student’s Association had to offer in terms of fashion. Already knowing Howard to be a daily fashion Mecca, I had very high expectations of what was to come. The show started a little late, but it was made up with the masterful spinning of celebrity DJ Obi of AJ Entertainment.

The opening act, PCE Crew had the crowd bumping to their hit “Ko mo le”. The theme of the show was the “7 Deadly Sins”. Each sin was showcased with a short dance/skit directed by Derrick Hughes. The designers showcased were, Glamm Fashions, Urebor Fautore (Fatima Ozoya), Note2Self Clothing, Aya Morrison, Cote Minou, and Idia Design. Check out the pics for the hottest, trendy cultural wears for today’s youth. Big kudos to the Director of the show, Funmi Oludaiye and her crew for a well directed and put together showcase. We’ll be looking to see what next year has to offer. I would like to give a special Amebor thank you to Tade Fayomi for all her help. Now take a look at the pictures, you WON’T be disappointed.
