Reuters reports that a statement from Ghana President John Atta-Mills‘ officeconfirms that the leader has passed away.

The statement read: “It is with a heavy heart…that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana.”

DEAD: President Atta Mills has died at the age of 68

BBC Africa confirmed the announcement and reported that Atta Mills died in a hospital in Accra.  He died at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra following a sudden cardiac arrest.His death comes two days after his 68th birthday. Atta Mills became president of Ghana in 2009 after losing twice. He previously served as vice president.
