The Leaders of the Boko Haram sect have sent a stern warning that their next targets include the University of Benin and University of Ibadan.  The University of Benin was said to have received an email addressed to its University’s Registrar warning of a possible attack to the institution. The sect claimed that the decision to bomb the university is part of its agenda to stop western education spreading in the country.

In a statement released by the sect it said.

“This is not a threat; instead it is a notification that must be strictly adhered to. Western education must stop in Nigeria. May Allah bless us.”

Simultaneously, the University of Ibadan confirmed that it received a threat warning and that it has made plans to beef up its security.

The Vice chancellor of the University, Prof Elijah Afolabi Bamigboye said:

“We heard rumours that a group which detests education is likely to descend on institutions where education is being imparted. We heard that UI is top on the list. When we heard the rumour of threat to bomb UI, we will not be taking any chances. We have directed the security department to step up screening of all vehicles into the campus. My car too was subjected to thorough search this morning.”

As the rumour of the threat spread in University of Ibadan, it led to panic among staff and students and there was heavy security presence in and around the campus. Since last month’s UN bombing which left several hundreds dead, the general public and authorities in Nigeria have been taking bomb threats serious.
